Hmong Art in Belgium (Photos)
Dili fashion practitioners, now based in Paris, don't often travel between France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. However, this bright red brick house stands out sharply against the darker surrounding buildings. Each of the three-story structures features a circle of colorful pottery figures on the exterior, reminiscent of 17th-century palaces that once belonged to wealthy industrialists in Belgium.
We stumbled upon the Miao dress exhibition by accident, which coincided with the ongoing Europalia Cultural Festival in Belgium. F-King lives near the border of Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, where driving a car is almost synonymous with "going abroad." So, whenever he visits Germany, goes to the Netherlands for a movie, or just runs errands in Belgium, it feels like crossing borders. This Christmas, he chose to escape Paris and settle into a cozy, lazy nest in a small German town.
On a Sunday morning, F-King yawned and suggested we head to Liège, a small town just across the Belgian border, for the morning market. Honestly, I wasn’t too excited about the market, but since there was nothing interesting at home, going out to see something new seemed better than staying put. As we drove through the lush, rainy countryside, we found ourselves unexpectedly in the gray city of Liège.
Once an industrial powerhouse known for coal, the city has changed a lot. The only thing that still stands out is a wide street running across the Seine-like river, and a train station that reportedly cost 30 million euros to build — though from the outside, it looks rather modest. We started our walk along the river, not really sure where we were going, but somehow ended up walking through the market area. We passed shoe shine stalls, vegetable stands, fruit vendors, and hot dog carts selling onions or sauerkraut. We wandered aimlessly, and before we knew it, we had accidentally walked into the Miao Clothing exhibition.
