During the upstart, the limited store moved into Sanlitun Village.

In the heart of Beijing's Sanlitun Village, the "Upstart" pop-up period has made its debut, blending Chinese and Finnish design aesthetics. Curated by Shumeng Ye, a Finnish designer with deep ties to China, along with a group of creative friends from around the world—including TheThing, a well-known local Chinese trend brand—the event offers a unique space for innovation and expression. Running from January 5 to February 5, 2011, the limited-time store is more than just a retail experience; it's a platform for fresh ideas, challenging conventional consumer habits, and redefining how we interact with fashion and design. As Ye explained, “'Upstarts' is not just about selling products—it’s about creating a dialogue and pushing boundaries.” The store features a range of affordable mini-collections specifically designed for this pop-up period, available only during the event. Among the highlights is the "Slow and Steady Win the Race" collection from New York, emphasizing that great design should be accessible to all. In addition, the store carries Native Fitzsimmons Boots, adding a touch of American craftsmanship to the mix. Shumeng Ye, who grew up in China but studied graphic design in Finland, brings a unique perspective to her work. Her background gives her a deep understanding of both Chinese culture and the global market. She constantly explores new business models and uses branding as a tool to influence consumer behavior. One of her earlier projects was the "Book of Warriors," a publication created for one of China’s most iconic sport shoe brands. These shoes, once popular among Chinese youth in the 70s and 80s, had faded into obscurity, becoming associated with migrant workers and farmers. Ye aimed to revive their image, transforming them into a symbol that could appeal to international audiences and challenge the perception of "Made in China." The project was widely recognized, with the book being sold in top European stores like Colette, Patta, and Wood Wood. Through initiatives like "Upstart," Ye continues to explore the intersection of culture, design, and commerce, proving that creativity can drive meaningful change in the consumer landscape.
