Grass weaving is incorporated into the Binzhou compulsory education curriculum

Binzhou City's Zhenghong Town is a well-known hub for grass and weaving crafts in China. The area is rich in natural resources, with rivers and valleys providing an abundance of reeds and willows. This has led to a long-standing tradition where every household engages in the art of basket-making and weaving. Over time, the local industry has grown significantly, with numerous processing and export enterprises forming a solid economic foundation that supports the rural development of the town. In recent years, several primary and secondary schools in the area have actively participated in national curriculum reforms by integrating traditional grass weaving into their educational programs. These activities are designed to cultivate students' teamwork and creative thinking. Based on students’ different interests, the schools organize group weaving projects, arrange factory visits, and let students experience the challenges and joys of the craft. The schools hold weaving activities every two days, with full-time teachers guiding students through the process of making grass and willow products. As a result, many students have transformed theoretical knowledge into practical skills. Regular “Speech and Report Meetings” are held to introduce the history of weaving, offering a platform for students passionate about the craft to explore and grow. During the weaving process, students often face physical challenges such as blisters, stained clothes, or minor injuries, but none of them complain. These experiences help them appreciate the value of hard work and human ingenuity. In class discussions like “I Love Grass Weaving,” students freely express their thoughts and feelings. Additionally, during events like the “New Year I Love Hope Project,” students contribute money and show compassion, developing a stronger sense of social responsibility. The school has also set clear educational goals and content based on students’ lives and societal needs. These goals focus on combining theory with practice, ensuring that learning is both practical and measurable. For younger students, the emphasis is on appreciating the beauty and history of weaving. Older students are guided to create simple handcrafted items like stationery boxes and teaching aids, encouraging them to take part in real-world tasks. Students have even created larger paper structures such as cubes, cylinders, and cones, which become unique features around the school. During the "Liuyi" festival, the community and elderly residents were moved by performances like "Yan is a Woven Small Hand," a modern Huai Opera, and a dance titled "Yang Willow." The event received widespread praise and brought positive social impact. To encourage creativity, the school uses both qualitative and quantitative assessments during evaluations, focusing on students’ progress and skill development. This approach builds confidence and fosters independent thinking. Students are given the freedom to explore, innovate, and showcase their work in the school’s exhibition room. Some of their creations have even won awards at the "Nineteenth Grass and Liu Product Exhibition." In one example, while studying the text "Song He He," some students creatively added Hua Lan strings to beads and tied ribbons into a "Crown" for the Qin king. This inspired further innovation and deepened their understanding of the text. The school also emphasizes individualized learning, allowing each student to choose projects that match their interests and talents. This not only enriches their personal growth but also helps them understand the cultural and economic significance of the craft. Middle and high school students are involved in planting, harvesting, and preparing willow materials at the school’s willow farm. They learn weaving techniques and are encouraged to participate in community-based weaving activities, contributing to the local economy and gaining valuable hands-on experience.
