alissa’s classic shirt

Certainly! Here's the rewritten content: --- Today, we’re thrilled to share a guest post from Alissa, who has crafted two stunning versions of The Classic Shirt. It’s always inspiring to see how different fabrics can transform a pattern, and Alissa has done an incredible job showcasing the versatility of this design. Take it away, Alissa! Hi everyone! For years, I’ve been searching for the perfect button-down shirt pattern. I wanted something that felt both feminine and timeless, with enough variations to suit any occasion and fabric type. After lots of research and trial runs, I finally found my holy grail: The Classic Shirt by Liesl + Co. ![Front view of a woman wearing a button-down shirt and jeans.](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/53e2f644e1157f4791255151e7c27069.jpeg) I’ve been sewing since junior high, but I really got back into it during college after knee surgery left me needing a creative outlet. Over time, what started as a hobby evolved into a small business making bags and accessories, which eventually expanded into knitwear. Nowadays, I mostly sew for myself, aiming for a 98% handmade wardrobe that reflects my personal style. I’ve spent most of my sewing journey working with knits, avoiding anything too challenging like zippers, buttons, or woven fabrics. But during lockdown, I decided to push myself out of my comfort zone. Sewing became a way to conquer fears and learn new skills—zippers, buttons, you name it. And now, I’m hooked! One of my favorite projects is making shirt dresses. They’re perfect for working from home while still looking professional on video calls. After testing several patterns, I found a few favorites. However, I quickly realized that shirt dresses require a lot of fabric, whereas a regular shirt needs far less. That led me to explore the world of shirts. Who doesn’t love a good button-down? Despite trying multiple patterns, I still hadn’t found the ideal shirt design. Then I stumbled upon rave reviews for The Classic Shirt online—on The Foldline, their Facebook group, Instagram, and YouTube. The glowing feedback convinced me to give it a shot. For my first attempt, I used a budget-friendly Kate Spade twin sheet set I’d picked up on sale. I chose View B with pleated pockets. To my surprise, the instructions kept me engaged throughout the entire process. Liesl + Co.’s directions were clear and straightforward, introducing me to techniques I hadn’t tried before. Attaching the collar and cuffs felt like magic, and those pesky pocket linings? Piece of cake! ![Back and front view of a woman wearing a button-down shirt and denim skirt.](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/6bc7deb2a44aaa2ea9211edde0d58ae3.jpg) Encouraged by my success, I decided to push the boundaries further. For my second version, I opted for a luxurious striped rayon fabric from Dashwood Studios, sourced through Stylemaker Fabrics. This fabric pressed beautifully, but it was slippery and required extra care during cutting and sewing. I went with View A this time, adding French seams—and yes, there was some unpicking along the way. But hey, every seamstress knows that mistakes are part of the process! Both of my Classic Shirts turned out beautifully, and I think I’ve finally found my go-to pattern. The finishes are nearly flawless, though I’ll need to refine the bottom hem where a few raw edges peek through. The fit is spot-on, and the length works perfectly whether I tuck it in or wear it untucked. Plus, the range of customization options means endless possibilities. Next up, I’m planning a chambray shirt with embroidered dots. And I’m equally excited to dive into more patterns from Liesl + Co. --- I hope you enjoyed Alissa’s journey as much as we did.
