A few years ago, when my daughter was about six months old, I decided to give sewing a shot—and I fell head over heels in love with it right away. Oliver + S patterns were among the first I experimented with, and I was utterly captivated by the beautiful garments showcased on Flickr and various sewing blogs. It feels surreal to be writing about my favorite Oliver + S pattern now, but here we go…. Choosing just one favorite pattern from Oliver + S is no easy feat, as their designs consistently put a smile on my face whenever my daughter Freya wears them. However, if I had to pick just one, it would definitely be the Lunch Box Culottes. There’s something about their versatility and charm that keeps drawing me back to this pattern time and time again. My very first pair of Lunch Box Culottes was made shortly after the pattern’s release, using a vibrant red cotton fabric I stumbled upon. Although they were slightly large on my petite daughter, I couldn’t help but fall in love with them immediately. I quickly adjusted the elastic waistband and promptly began work on my second pair. For my next pair, I opted for a mustard yellow Cotton and Steel fabric. While this wasn’t a color I typically gravitated toward, it turned out to be a perfect match for this pattern. Walking through stores, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride when people admired my daughter’s outfit. Another pair I created last year was part of a black-and-white themed challenge. I paired the culottes with the Butterfly Blouse, which was a refreshing change from my usual t-shirt combos. While I haven’t yet attempted the knit top included in the pattern due to my lack of confidence in working with knits, perhaps someday I’ll muster the courage to give it a try. This summer, I made two more pairs. One set featured a spotted denim fabric, and as always, the intricate details of this pattern were nothing short of spectacular. They’re not only stylish but also highly functional, especially for my energetic little girl. These culottes have been a staple in her wardrobe, whether at home, out and about, or at daycare.
For my latest pair, I used a larger polka-dot print leftover from a dress I made for myself earlier. These culottes might just be my absolute favorites yet. I made a size three for my nearly-four-year-old, and I appreciate how well they continue to fit her, making them another great investment!
