mire’s neighborhood jacket
I absolutely adore the jacket I crafted using the Neighborhood Sweatshirt + Hoodie pattern paired with softshell fabric. This combination ensures that Mire stays cozy and dry during those crisp autumn mornings. Trust me, Mire will be snug as a bug in this creation!
As the season shifted into autumn, the air grew cooler, bringing along its usual mix of clouds, rain, and dampness. My old sweatshirt just wasn't cutting it anymore, especially during my early morning strolls. Luckily, I had some softshell fabric tucked away in my sewing stash. With this material, I decided to create a jacket based on the Neighborhood Hoodie design.
Softshell fabric is truly remarkable—it’s water and wind-resistant thanks to its dense surface. It’s also tough, flexible, and allows for good airflow. Compared to regular sweatshirt fabric, it’s far warmer since it features a fuzzy fleece backing combined with a woven, waterproof outer layer.
To customize the fit, I widened the sleeves slightly. For the cuffs, I utilized ribbing, cutting it according to the original sleeve cuff template. I kept the rest of the adjustments minimal. While constructing the hoodie, I meticulously edge-stitched all the seams on both sides for a polished look.
Morning walks have been getting darker as the days grow shorter and the nights longer. To ensure visibility, I added some reflective tape to the back of the jacket.
This jacket is perfect for those chilly, breezy, or drizzly autumn mornings. Regular sweatshirts wouldn’t stand up to the wind or keep out moisture like this one does. Once winter arrives, I’ll likely switch to something heavier, but until then, this softshell jacket is my go-to.

The interior finish of this jacket is a real highlight—so clean and professional. It’s the little details that make all the difference, like the reinforced seams and the thoughtful addition of reflective elements for safety.

When I first started planning this project, I wasn’t sure how it would turn out. But now that it’s complete, I couldn’t be happier. The jacket fits beautifully, and the softshell fabric feels amazing against my skin. Plus, the slight modifications I made ensured a comfortable, tailored fit.

One thing I particularly love about this jacket is how practical it is. It’s not just stylish; it’s functional too. Whether you’re running errands or taking a brisk walk, this jacket keeps you warm and dry. And let’s not forget how easy it was to sew—thanks to the clear instructions in the Neighborhood Hoodie pattern.
Overall, I’m thrilled with how this jacket turned out. It’s become an essential part of my wardrobe, especially during these transitional months. If you’re thinking about making your own, I highly recommend giving it a try. The results are worth every stitch!

Now, I can’t wait to see what projects I tackle next. Sewing has always been such a rewarding hobby, and this jacket is just another example of how creative expression through fabric can lead to something truly special. Stay tuned for more updates—I’ve got a few ideas brewing already!
[End Note: This jacket is a testament to how combining the right patterns with high-quality materials can result in a garment that’s both practical and fashionable. Happy sewing!]
