sew + tell: bento tee, alabama style
Living in our Madrid neighborhood has been an unexpected delight. At first glance, it might seem a bit rough around the edges—across the street from our apartment is a dilapidated building that used to house a disco, and we're sandwiched between two heavily touristic areas. But when we took a closer look, we realized there's something special about it. Our street is surprisingly quiet, yet we're just minutes away from all the action in central Madrid. Plus, our corner spot gets us plenty of natural light and breathing room. And let's not forget the breathtaking views from the rooftop terrace. In New York, you'd need a much higher budget to enjoy anything remotely similar.
Our neighborhood has this quirky charm that feels authentically Spanish, which I absolutely adore. Around the corner, there's this eccentric fruit shop that reminds me of something out of a Wes Anderson movie, complete with its vibrant mosaic sign. It's these little details that make our community feel so unique.
Speaking of unique projects, I recently worked on a Liesl + Co Bento Tee with a twist. I gave it a vintage-style ringer neck by using navy-colored Laguna jersey for the neckband, adding a touch of nostalgia. For the reverse appliqué, I went with the word "gracias," which I traced onto the fabric using a lightbox technique. I loved how the letters turned out, especially since the appliqué lets you see through to the layers beneath. The fabric itself is a dream—Laguna cotton jersey from Robert Kaufman, with a perfect blend of 95% cotton and 5% spandex. It holds its shape beautifully while still feeling soft and substantial.
This project was such a joy to work on, especially because it’s portable and quick to finish. I particularly enjoyed trimming away the excess fabric after stitching the letters—it’s incredibly satisfying! I didn't make any major changes to the pattern; instead, I focused on experimenting with the appliqué and contrast neck. It pairs beautifully with both pencil skirts and my go-to City Stroll Wrap Skirt. If you have kids, you could definitely adapt this design for an Oliver + S Lunch Box Tee—they’d love it too!
Rachel has some fantastic Bento Tee ideas coming up later this week, so stay tuned for more creative inspiration. Meanwhile, if you're ever in Madrid, come visit our quirky neighborhood—it’s full of surprises!
