Oliver + S School Bus T-shirt

Hello, everyone! My name is Elisabeth Larsen. I'm a mom of three and an avid fan of Oliver + S. You can find me on Instagram as @sew_scrummy and on Flickr as Elisabeth Larsen.

I began sewing when I was a teenager, but it wasn't until my mom gifted me a sewing machine for my birthday a few years ago that I truly picked it up again as an adult. Shortly after, I stumbled upon a picture of an Oliver + S pattern on a sewing blog and instantly fell in love with the idea of making one myself!

My very first Oliver + S creation was an Ice Cream top, and since then, I've amassed fifteen different patterns from their collection. I adore how each project comes out beautifully finished, thanks to their clear instructions and helpful sewing tips.

One of my main goals in sewing for my kids is to craft pieces they’ll cherish and wear often. When it came to choosing my favorite Oliver + S pattern, there was no doubt—it had to be the School Bus T-shirt. All three of my children wear theirs nonstop, making it a clear winner in our household.

Before diving into my first School Bus T-shirt, I was quite nervous about working with knits. I worried that my regular sewing machine wouldn’t handle it well. Fortunately, Liesl provides fantastic tips for sewing with knits, turning what seemed daunting into a simple and enjoyable process. I was hooked after my first attempt and have made thirteen of these shirts over the past two years.

One of the things I love most about this pattern is its versatility—perfect for both boys and girls. With different neckband and sleeve options, it easily adapts to suit everyone’s style. As a mother of two boys and a girl, having a unisex pattern like this is a dream come true!

The School Bus T-shirt also serves as a fantastic base for creative appliqué work. Inspired by the Mini Boden look, I added designs to the first two shirts that I knew my kids would absolutely adore.

The Oliver + S blog is packed with brilliant ideas and tutorials offering endless possibilities for customization. Using their color blocking tutorial, I created matching shirts for my boys.

I revisited the same tutorial to design a ninja-themed shirt for my youngest child—the entire back is covered in ninja fabric!

With another tutorial, I transformed the basic design into an A-line, high-low version for my daughter.

I also tried adding faux layered long sleeves to a volcano-themed shirt, inspired by yet another tutorial.

And why stop there? Adding a peplum gives the shirt an extra flair! This particular piece was made for my daughter’s third birthday and remains her absolute favorite.

FOLLOWING THESE TUTORIALS HAS GIVEN ME THE CONFIDENCE TO TRY MY OWN ADAPTATIONS, SUCH AS THIS VERSION WITH A PETER PAN COLLAR.

Another fantastic aspect of this pattern is its speed—these shirts can be completed in just an afternoon, making them perfect for quick projects or thoughtful gifts. For instance, I crafted a matching "cousin shirt" for my nephew’s birthday, ensuring he had something special to match his cousin.

The final reason I adore this pattern is its scalability—it extends into adult sizes through the Metro T-shirt pattern. I own the family pack, which includes children’s sizes as well as men’s and women’s patterns. So far, I’ve used these patterns to make shirts for both my husband and myself. Knowing it will fit as my kids grow is such a relief—I even made a version for my husband with contrasting trim using the men’s pattern.

I’ve also sewn two Metro T-shirts for myself, and they’re among my favorites. The first one was made during my pregnancy with my third child—I sized up and used stretchy fabric, which worked wonderfully!

This three-quarter sleeve version was made just a few months ago.

I’ve got several more versions in mind! I’m excited to try making pajamas using this pattern alongside the Playtime Leggings. I also plan to experiment with additional color-blocking variations.

Thank you, Elisabeth!
