We absolutely love seeing what you create with Oliver + S patterns. The “My Favorite Oliver + S Pattern†series showcases fans who share their creations, and it’s always a treat to learn more about them as well. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce Elisabeth, who’s here to talk about her go-to pattern and all the amazing versions she’s sewn. Thanks so much for joining us, Elisabeth! Hello, everyone! My name is Elisabeth Larsen, and I’m a mom of three with a deep affection for Oliver + S patterns. You can find me on Instagram as @sew_scrummy or on Flickr under my full name. I started sewing when I was younger, but it wasn’t until my mom gifted me a sewing machine for my birthday a few years back that I truly got into it. Not long after receiving the machine, I stumbled upon a blog post featuring an Oliver + S pattern. It was love at first sight! I immediately decided I had to give it a try. My very first project was an Ice Cream top, and since then, I’ve amassed a collection of fifteen different Oliver + S patterns. What draws me to them is the attention to detail, the clarity of the instructions, and the beautifully finished garments that come out of each one. They’re simply delightful! When it came time to choose my favorite pattern, I naturally gravitated toward the one that my kids consistently reach for: the School Bus T-shirt. All three of my children adore theirs, and they’re always asking to wear them. It’s become a staple in our wardrobe. Before diving into the School Bus T-shirt, I was quite intimidated by sewing with knits. I worried that my regular sewing machine wouldn’t be up to the task. Thankfully, Liesl’s guidance and tips on working with knits made the process enjoyable and straightforward. After making my first one, I was hooked! In fact, I’ve made thirteen of these shirts over the past couple of years. One of the things I adore most about this pattern is its versatility—it works beautifully for both boys and girls. With different neckband and sleeve options, it’s endlessly customizable. Since I have two boys and one girl, it’s fantastic to have a pattern that fits all three of them. This pattern also serves as a great foundation for adding appliqués. I’ve always loved the Mini Boden appliquéd look, so for my first two shirts, I incorporated designs that I knew my kids would love. The Oliver + S blog is filled with incredible tutorials and ideas for customizations. I used this color-blocking tutorial to craft matching shirts for my boys. I revisited that same tutorial to make a ninja-themed shirt for my youngest—complete with ninja fabric on the back. Using another tutorial, I created an A-line, high-low version for my daughter. I also tried out this faux layered long sleeve tutorial to design a volcano shirt for my son. And why not add a peplum? This shirt was made for my daughter’s third birthday and remains her absolute favorite. Following these tutorials has given me the confidence to experiment with my own adaptations, such as this version with a Peter Pan collar. Another perk of this pattern is how quickly it sews up! I can finish one of these shirts in just an afternoon, making it perfect for last-minute projects or gifts. For instance, I made this one for my nephew so he could have a matching “cousin shirt†with my youngest. Lastly, the School Bus T-shirt pattern extends into adult sizes as the Metro T-shirt. I purchased the family pack, which includes children’s sizes as well as men’s and women’s patterns. So far, I’ve used these patterns to make shirts for myself and my husband, and I’m thrilled to know they’ll still fit when my kids outgrow the smaller sizes. I even made a version with contrast trim for my husband using the men’s pattern. I’ve also made two Metro T-shirts for myself, and they’re among my favorites. The first was made during my pregnancy with my third child—I sized up and used stretchy fabric, and it worked perfectly! I recently made a three-quarter sleeve version just a few months ago. I have even more versions in the works! I’m excited to try making pajamas with this pattern paired with Playtime Leggings, and I’d love to experiment with additional color-blocking ideas. Thank you, Elisabeth! If you'd like to reminisce about your own sewing journey, check out Liesl’s introduction to the family pack of T-shirt patterns from April 2014!
