flat s visits tokyo

Just heard from Flat S again, and wow, she's really been keeping busy! After visiting Texas in the U.S., she hopped on a plane and traveled halfway across the globe to spend some quality time with Emi and her family in Tokyo. Emi, who runs the popular blog Just Add Fabric, is quite the secret keeper. Recently, she joined us for a feature on one of her favorite Oliver + S patterns, and she didn't let slip a word about Flat S staying with her. Now, here’s an update straight from Emi about what Flat S got up to this summer. One sunny morning, as my girls and I sat at the kitchen table chatting about our day, there was a knock on the door. We were all puzzled—no one was expected! To our delight, it was none other than the famous Flat S herself, all the way from America. It was such a delightful surprise! Right away, the girls bombarded her with questions about her summer adventures. Where should we take her first? Tokyo offers so many exciting activities in the summer. Our first stop? The Miraikan, or the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, to meet ASIMO, short for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility. Watching ASIMO walk and talk on its own was truly fascinating. The girls were amazed to learn that it can communicate in both Japanese and English. Afterward, we wandered around the museum, meeting some friends from Australia who were also visiting. There were plenty of interactive exhibits, and the kids had a blast exploring them all. One of the highlights was the "Curiosity Field," a special area designed for young visitors. The girls took Flat S there to let off some steam, but by then, they could tell she was a little tired. So, they suggested she join the moms for some quiet time. Another summer tradition in Japan is shopping for a new backpack, especially for kids starting elementary school the following April. These backpacks, called "randoseru," are usually made of durable leather in traditional red or black, though now they come in a rainbow of colors. Since Flat S was eager to experience local customs, we took her on the subway to a specialty shop. The shop was filled with colorful randoseru, and the girls helped Flat S test out different styles and colors. It was incredible how many options there were! Later in the summer, the girls attended the "Fashion for Children" exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum. As we walked through the exhibit, the girls commented on how different the clothes were compared to what their mom wore as a child. (I tried to explain that I wasn’t actually born in the Victorian era, but decided against it—it might have confused them further!) Unfortunately, we couldn’t snap any photos inside the museum. Outside, the girls listened to a story about a girl trying on different hats. Inspired, they sketched their own hat designs on plastic sheets, which they proudly held over their heads as makeshift accessories. Though they seemed less interested in the activity than in playing tag on the lawn. Finally, Flat S posed for a group photo before bidding us farewell. Thank you so much for visiting us in Tokyo, Flat S! We can’t wait to hear about your next adventure. Safe travels! Does anyone have any guesses where Flat S might head next? We're just as curious as you are! Related posts might include more travel stories or cultural insights from different parts of the world. Stay tuned!
