sewn by kids: sunny day shorts
I recently stumbled upon an adorable pair of shorts on Instagram and was absolutely amazed to discover that they had been crafted by a child. It got me thinking about the simple yet rewarding process of teaching kids basic sewing skills. We offer several beginner-friendly sewing patterns in our one-scissor collection and on our free pattern page that are ideal for young learners. Here’s Ann from Australia sharing her experience with her daughter’s sewing journey.

As a mother of nine and currently homeschooling my youngest five, I firmly believe that nurturing homemaking skills alongside academics is crucial. When it came to teaching my children how to sew, I found it challenging to carve out time for it due to my busy schedule. Recently, however, we gave our 8-year-old daughter, Loretta, a small sewing machine for her birthday, and it transformed the way she approached learning new skills.

After practicing some basic straight seams, she was ready to take on a more substantial project. We decided to create the Sunny Day Shorts pattern in the 6-12 month size for her 9-month-old nephew. Loretta confidently pinned the fabric, sewed all the straight seams, operated the iron, trimmed the threads, and even threaded the elastic herself. The curved crotch seam required a bit more guidance, so I stood behind her while she sat at the machine, helping her guide the fabric through. Following the clear and concise pattern instructions step-by-step, we completed the project faster than expected!

I was pleasantly surprised by how swiftly the shorts came together—just like previous projects. In total, it took us only one afternoon. During that time, I managed to prepare dinner and assist my 12-year-old daughter, who also joined in, to sew her own pair of shorts. To complement the ensemble, I whipped up a cheerful School Bus T-shirt in the same size, extending the hem by an inch to accommodate the baby's longer torso and chubby tummy.

Loretta, being the adventurous tomboy she is, initially seemed indifferent toward sewing. But to my delight, she thoroughly enjoyed operating the sewing machine and the iron—tools she proudly refers to as “power tools.†I couldn’t be prouder of her accomplishment on her very first project, and I’m certain she’ll love seeing her handiwork worn by her little cousin as much as I do.

If you know a child who has successfully completed one of our sewing patterns and would like to share their story, feel free to reach out to us at [contact information]. Let’s celebrate their creativity together!
