camp shirt: liesl’s liberty print

Hello, friends! I’m excited to share another recent sewing project I completed for myself. This piece has been a long time coming, as I’ve had this particular Liberty lawn fabric tucked away for quite a while now. “Strawberry Thief” is hands down my favorite Liberty print, and I knew I’d get plenty of wear out of this darker gray variation. With only a small piece of fabric to work with, I decided to create a Camp Shirt—a style that seemed perfect for this particular material. The blouse turned out to be exactly what I envisioned: a versatile layering piece that adds a touch of texture to my wardrobe. While the fabric was substantial enough to support a classic shirt collar, something about this print felt better suited to the relaxed vibe of a Camp Shirt. Perhaps it’s the way the design flows with my plans to pair it with a grandpa cardigan and some herringbone trousers—styles that feel casual yet put-together. There’s definitely an unspoken connection between certain fabrics and specific silhouettes, isn’t there? Given how limited my fabric supply was, I had to get creative with the details. The facings were pieced together, which added an unexpected charm to the finished garment. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough left over for pockets, but the busy print made their absence hardly noticeable. I still miss having them though—they’re such a handy feature! One element I absolutely adore is the center-back inverted box pleat. It’s a subtle detail that gives the shirt a touch of sophistication without being overly fussy.
