Flat S has been having the time of her life in Australia! She's such a clever little flat character that she decided to extend her stay in the southern hemisphere to avoid the chilly winter in the northern part of the world. After a fantastic experience during the sheep shearing season, she set off for the bustling city of Sydney.
While visiting Sydney, Flat S was warmly hosted for the holidays by Justine Jennings, known as justmejay on Flickr, and her family. Here's a detailed account from Justine about their memorable time together.
Flat S initially planned a brief stopover in Sydney after her delightful farm visit with Nicole. She arrived in early December, just as we were setting up our Christmas tree. The festive decorations, especially the felt ones crafted by my mom, caught her eye, and she eagerly asked if she could stay for Christmas. Naturally, we were delighted to welcome her into our home for an authentic Australian Christmas!
Our Christmas preparations were underway when Flat S arrived. The kids were thrilled to find her under the tree, and she fit right in with all the holiday cheer. On Christmas Eve, we embarked on a special outing to the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. It was extra special because we were also meeting up with some dear friends, Colette (colesworth on Flickr) and her daughter Freya. Even though the weather was overcast, the beauty of Sydney Harbour remained undiminished.
Christmas Day was filled with excitement, starting early as always in our household. The children were up bright and early, eager to discover what Santa had brought. The gift-opening session was a whirlwind of excitement and laughter. Unfortunately, the weather mirrored Flat S's usual environment—grey and rainy for most of the day—so our outdoor lunch plans had to be abandoned. Our family gatherings typically include immediate family members, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Lunch is a formal sit-down affair featuring both traditional dishes like roast pork and less conventional options such as salads. Instead of a steaming hot Christmas pudding, I prepared an ice-cream pudding this year, complete with cherries, raspberries, and chunks of Cherry Ripe.
Boxing Day continued the holiday spirit, marked by another family gathering with my mother's siblings and cousins. The menu featured more roasted pork, cold meats, and salads, along with desserts like apple pie, lemon meringue pie, and trifle. Flat S thoroughly enjoyed herself during these festive occasions.
Sydney takes on a quieter demeanor after the Christmas rush, giving us the perfect opportunity to unwind. The weather quickly returned to its typical summertime glory, and Flat S took full advantage of the sunny days with a couple of refreshing swims.
Rather than jetting off on New Year's Eve, Flat S chose to ring in the new year with us. Our New Year's Eve celebrations are a cherished family tradition. For nearly two decades, we've gathered with our close friends Deb and Gary at Camp Cove, Watson's Bay, overlooking the stunning Sydney Harbour. The evening begins early, around 5 PM, with a delightful picnic dinner featuring an array of delicious foods: cheeses, dips, mustard yogurt chicken, and fresh fruit with fruit dip for dessert. Over the years, our group has expanded from four to thirteen, thanks to Deb and Gary's growing family.
Camp Cove holds historical significance as the site of the first landing in Sydney Harbour, and Flat S relished her afternoon there. However, the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the spectacular fireworks display.
